Who inspires you?
When I started working with polymer clay, a friend had mentioned to me that a pendant I made reminded her of Gustav Klimt. At the time, I was using metallic canes and playing with values. I’d always enjoyed his work but never made the connection. I love the shards of light and metallic fabrics that just seem to glow in his work. I’m also inspired by Henri Matisse. Not so much the colors he uses, but I enjoy the shapes. And M. C. Escher is another artist who inspires me. When I took my color theory class, I learned to look not just at the objects, but the negative space created between them. To this day, I consciously try to see that.

What inspires you?
I love color and texture so there are many things that inspire me. Fabric for one, is probably my earliest recollection of my first inspiration. When I was young, my mother was a dressmaker. I can still remember some of the fabrics from back then. The colors and textures were amazing. There was an abundance of fabric in our downstairs as that’s where she worked. I used to go around and touch a lot of the fabric. I especially loved the ones with the “bumpy” texture. And of course, nature inspires me. When I’m starting a new project, I pull a lot of color schemes from nature – but sometimes exaggerated. As I go for walks, I love looking at the cracks in the road. The texture is mesmerizing. And I also find music very helpful. I think what music does for me is to help me release my preconceived notions as to how to proceed and just “be”.

Where do you create?
About 10 years ago, we finished our basement complete with an additional bedroom. That bedroom has become my “metals” studio. The craft area that was made for the kids has become my polymer clay studio. I have taken pictures and they can be seen here: http://libzoid.net/blog/2008/03/31/studio-snapshot-janice-abarbanel/

How long have you been working with clay?
I started working with polymer clay in 2003 when I wanted to add color to a pendant. All of my learning has been either on-line or through books. I find it very stimulating everyday when I go online and see all the wonderful things being done with this material! My intention was to add polymer to my metal work but I feel I got totally absorbed in the polymer. I hope to bring more and more polymer back into metal. Over the period of a year, my beads have gone from mosaic, to yin yang, to madras and now to abstract landscapes. Who knows what the future will hold . . .

April Egg Challenge Winners

Friday, April 4th, 2008

What a great challenge this month! I think we all had as much fun with the creative process as we did making the final pieces. I can tell you from experience that covering an egg with polymer clay is no easy task which makes the final pieces even that much more amazing. Here are some hilarious stories & quotes from members about the process:

“I managed to survive the blowing out process but I got the first layer of clay on and cured, but ive got bubbles, big pimple like bubbles!!!!” Zoeowyn.etsy.com

“I have read the tutorial on how to blow out an egg. And much good it did me. Blew the first one up. Egg all over everywhere. Shell cracked.
Good job I’ve got chickens. Shall have to pop out and see if there’s another egg laid.” vickicockcroft.etsy.com

“Number of eggs I’ve broken so far on this project: 5″ beastlies.etsy.com

“This is really a challenge:) Well, I will try to do my best, but I cannot promise anything for sure, except some scrambled eggs :)” ZSBCreations.etsy.com

“I thought I would get started, so I blew out an egg and placed it in an egg carton on a paper towel on my kitchen counter to dry out. My husband comes in and sees it on the counter, huffs, closes the lid on the carton (crushing my egg) and throws it in the trash. Thank you very much. Back to the drawing board.” blockpartypress.etsy.com

“I blew out my very first ever egg. No problem at all. “Ha” I thought “don’t know what all the fuss is about!” Let it dry. Started covering it. “Ha” I thought “don’t know what all the fuss is about”. Got about 1/2 way down. My egg imploded!!!!!!!!” Now I know what all the fuss is about. And I should remember that Pride goeth before a fall (or an imploding egg!) pipsjewellery.etsy.com

And the bad puns were rampant ( I have left the names out to protect the innocent):

“I’m almost finished my entry…I’m egg-hausted !!!”

“Are you eggztremely egghausted?”

“Yes , that’s eggactly how I feel !!!”

“Are you eggs-agerating?”

Ha! That conversation was eggsceptional ( I couldn’t help myself!).  Well I hope you now understand how much work, dedication and cracked eggs went into this month’s Challenge! Let’s get onto the winners!!

April Covered Egg Challenge - Vote & Win

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Here are the entries for the PCAGOE April Covered Egg Challenge. This month’s challenge is a technique that is fairly common and unique to polymer clay. Each member had to create a piece (functional or decorative) by covering an egg with polymer clay. There were no rules as to the technique used (canework, filigree, sculpture, mokume gane. etc..) and no rules as to the subject of the piece. Each member used their own unique skills to craft some fantastic pieces and for many entrants this was their first time trying to cover an egg. One thing that our members were able to prove, is that Beautiful Eggs are not just for Easter anymore! Many of these pieces are available for purchase, so check the links at the bottom if you are interested in making a purchase. Good Luck picking a favorite! As always, thanks to everyone that entered this month!!

VOTE for your favorite entry and be entered in a drawing to WIN one of two April prizes. The first is the What’s black and white and red all over? prize pack of 8 polymer clay items, all handmade with love by members of PCAGOE. This prize pack includes an incense burner by polymerclayproductions; earrings by madeinlowell; pins by pollyhyper, janzio and sallers; a heart cabochon by silvergate; cufflinks by huntersdesigns; and a drop pendant by juliespace. Together, these items are valued at over $100, and would make great gifts for everyone from hubby to kids to girlfriends or of course, you could keep them all for yourself ! The second prize this month is a beautiful polymer clay-covered egg by zudagay. Each canework leaf and flower has been applied individually to make a gorgeous spring work of art. What a perfect gift for Mom for Mother’s Day. There are two great prizes this month! So scroll down and vote for your favorite entry!
